Challenges of the BRICS and their influence on the international economy

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the challenge posed by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), a bloc of countries seeking to promote a multipolar international system in the 21st century. Since its inception in 2009, the group has advanced from an economic category to a political platform that challenges Western hegemony, promoting initiatives such as the New Development Bank and the use of local currencies to reduce dependence on the dollar. It also directly challenges traditional financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. The group's expansion in 2023 with the incorporation of new countries reflects its growing global influence. However, it faces significant internal challenges, such as the heterogeneity in size, influence, and political systems of its members. China's economic dominance generates imbalances, as well as rivalries and ideological differences, especially between democracies and authoritarian regimes, hindering the bloc's cohesion. These tensions limit its ability to act in a unified manner and affect its influence on the world stage. Despite this, the BRICS continue to be key players in the transformation of the international system, offering alternatives to traditional financial institutions and promoting a greater balance of power. Their ability to overcome their internal challenges will be crucial to consolidating their position as an effective and transformative player in global governance, with profound implications for other countries and the future of the world order.
