Abstract

Education has historically been considered a tool for social and economic development. However, in the 21st century, education faces a series of challenges that must be addressed to ensure its effectiveness and relevance in the current world. From the digital divide to the lack of resources and funding, as well as the need to update curricula and adapt to a multicultural and globalized world, these challenges emphasize the complexity and multiplicity of issues confronting education. Therefore, the general objective was to analyze the challenges of higher education in the current era: systematic perspectives in the 21st century. Framed within a qualitative approach, the research was descriptive in nature, with a systematic review of the state of the art through bibliographic research. Among the relevant results, some proposed solutions are highlighted, such as the need to adapt to rapid technological advancements, improve access to information, foster collaboration, and promote interactive learning. However, it is also important to recognize that a digital divide can arise between those who have access to technological resources and those who do not, thus exacerbating learning inequalities. It is concluded that education has been evolving alongside humankind, but it raises the question of whether it is adequately addressing current needs. Higher education institutions are spaces for experimentation and analysis with the purpose of continuously improving educational processes.
