RESPONSIBLE ELECTION OF FUTURE GOVERNORS IN PANAMA
Main Article Content
Abstract
The contribution of Rome and Athens in the implementation of voting between the 5th and 6th centuries BC led to the emergence and development of democracy. Panama replicates this system. Hence, the research emphasizes the responsibility of Panamanian citizens of legal age to vote in the upcoming elections in May 2024. Understanding the concept of suffrage, essential in democratic states despite legal restrictions, was the general objective. The qualitative approach involved a review of the state of the art, using descriptive, bibliographic documentary research, and hermeneutic methodology. The findings emphasize the importance of citizen participation beyond voting as a means to rescue democracy from disrepute. Abstentionism negatively affects democratic life, as citizen electoral involvement becomes a crucial mechanism to "reward or punish" public representatives. This document review provides a deeper comprehension of democracy's implementation and maintenance in Panama, underscoring the necessity of citizen engagement for its continuous success.
